The Growth of a Truck Assembly Plant that has created employment for Tanzanians

In just two years since its establishment, the HOWO truck assembly plant by Saturn Corporation Limited in Kigamboni- Dar es Salaam, has rapidly emerged as one of Tanzania’s notable industrial success stories, employing over 330 Tanzanians and steadily contributing to the growth of the manufacturing sector in the country.

Driven by the company’s strategic partnership with Sinotruk -China based manufacturers of HOWO heavy-duty trucks, the assembly plant has become Tanzania’s most advanced vehicle assembly operations, supporting technology transfer, local capacity building, and the Tanzania government’s broader industrialisation agenda.

“We began our operations 2 years ago and we are happy with the progress we are making as a company. We believe that this sector has the potential to absorb labour while building technical expertise”. Says Mehul Sachdev, Saturn Corporation’s Chief Operations Officer.

At the Kigamboni plant, workers are engaged across various functions, including engineering, assembly, quality control, and administration, all contributing to the gradual development of a skilled local workforce in vehicle manufacturing.

Mehul says the first thing they do when they recruit them is to ensure they undergo training to enable them align with international manufacturing standards, equipped with hands-on technical skills, and able to meet the precision, safety, and efficiency requirements of modern vehicle assembly operations.

Apart from training its own employees, Saturn is also working with the government on a program that will see TVET graduates accommodated at the plant to gain practical, industry-based experience through structured apprenticeships and on-the-job training within a real manufacturing environment.

Mr. Mehul says, this not only enhances the graduates’ employability but also bridges the gap between theory and practice

“By doing this, we are supporting and contributing to the strengthening of the country’s industrial skills base, as well as creating a pipeline of competent technicians while positioning the country to sustainably grow its automotive manufacturing sector”. He adds

From its operations, the company has distinguished itself as the largest and most advanced truck assembly plant in the region, setting a high standard for excellence in Tanzania’s manufacturing sector.

With a strong capability to assemble and customise heavy-duty trucks, the company plays a critical role in powering key sectors of the economy, including construction, mining, logistics, agriculture, and infrastructure development, sectors that underpin the country’s ongoing growth and industrial transformation

“To be specific, we currently have a daily output of up to 22 tractor trucks per day, translating to about 536 units every month, making this facility one of the most active truck assembly plants in the region”. Affirms Mehul.

The management affirms that the company is set to employ even more Tanzanians following ongoing discussions and plans with Sinotruk International, to expand its capacity to be able to assemble a full range of vehicles from one tonne to 50 tonnes including, pick-up trucks as well as light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles.

Further, the company also anticipates reaching a cumulative production of 10,000 heavy-duty vehicles by 2027, a move that will further strengthen Tanzania’s transport and logistics sector while supporting the country’s industrial growth.

Beyond direct employment, the plant is also supporting livelihoods across the broader value chain.

Transporters, spare parts suppliers, mechanics, and service providers are increasingly benefiting from the growing demand generated by locally assembled trucks.

The company’s progress has attracted attention from both government and international stakeholders. Recently, China’s ambassador to Tanzania Her Excellency Chen Mingjian paid a visit to the plant in Kigamboni and hailed the company’s performance while underscoring the strategic importance of partnerships in advancing industrial development.

The visit reaffirmed the role of collaboration between Tanzania and China in driving manufacturing growth and technology transfer.

“I have witnessed for myself how Saturn Corporation is striving to elevate and enhance the relationship between China and Tanzania through this plant. I am happy that Saturn has demonstrated a comprehensive and strategic partnership with Sinotruk,” she said.

But in another move seen to be strategically positioning the company away from basic assembly to world class production facility, Saturn corporation is also currently working on strengthening its operational excellence by positioning the plant at par with global manufacturing standards.

The company is undertaking internationally recognised certifications including ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001 for Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001 for Occupational Health and Safety.

It is also embedding Kaizen principles of continuous improvement to enhance efficiency, minimise waste, optimise processes, and consistently deliver high-quality products that meet international benchmarks.
“These certifications will enable us consistently deliver on quality, safety as well as environmental responsibility” Concludes Mehul.
