Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, – The Treasury Register has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the business environment, promising to collaborate with Airtel in advancing the country’s digital transformation journey and attainment of the development vision 2050.

Speaking to journalists after meeting Group Chairman and CEO, Sunil Bharti Mittal and Airtel Tanzania’s Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, at the Treasury Registrar’s Office in Dar es Salaam for high-level discussions on advancing digital connectivity, expanding financial inclusion, and supporting the country’s socio-economic growth.
The Treasury Registrar, Nehemiah Mchechu, said that, “Today is a very crucial day. We are hosting key executives from Airtel Global, including their Chairman and CEO. Our discussions focused not only on Airtel Tanzania’s operations but also on the broader development of the telecommunications sector and digital systems in general.”
Mchechu also added that the government is ready to match Airtel’s commitment by ensuring the right policies, infrastructure and investment environment are in place.
Mr. Mittal reaffirmed Airtel’s commitment to working closely with the Government of Tanzania by deepening investment in the country’s digital infrastructure as part of the broader national development agenda under the Vision 2050 to accelerate the digital economy.
“Our discussions with her excellency delved deep into making more investments in the country and, more importantly, recognising India and Tanzania’s partnership. The government’s ownership of Airtel Tanzania by a 49 per cent stake is a clear testimony that Airtel Tanzania belongs to the people of Tanzania. Today, we have made further commitments to invest more money in our networks and fibre, and more importantly, we are looking at further accelerating the digital penetration in Tanzania,” he said.
Mr Mittal also said: “We believe that any country that is growing at a pace that Tanzania is growing needs to have a digital framework to accelerate the economy. I was delighted to hear the views of Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan that the country is committed to reach the vision of 2050 where digital connectivity and digital services will hold a very prominent role. And we at Airtel are determined to play a very meaningful role in contributing to the attainment of that vital vision.”
Mr. Mittal’s visit is part of a wider programme of engagements with key government and regulatory stakeholders, including the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) and the Ministry of Finance and Planning, to further support the country’s digital transformation journey.
