Saturn corporation advances ISO Standards in local vehicle assembly

Saturn Corporation Limited, a vehicle assembly company based in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, is spearheading a shift towards internationally recognised ISO certification two years after establishing its HOWO truck assembly plant, positioning itself among early-stage manufacturers aligning with global production standards.

‎The company says the move is intended to strengthen internal systems as it scales operations and deepen confidence in locally assembled vehicles. Chief Operating Officer Mr. Mehul Sachdev notes that the decision is both strategic and forward-looking.

‎“From the outset, we have prioritised building strong systems and a skilled workforce that can meet international manufacturing standards. ISO certification is a continuation of that approach. It allows us to formalise our processes and ensure consistency as we grow,” he says.

‎Working in partnership with Sinotruk, Saturn has developed an assembly plant that supports key sectors of the economy, including construction, mining, logistics and agriculture. The facility has steadily built a workforce of more than 330 Tanzanians, with employees engaged across engineering, assembly, quality control and administrative functions. Training is embedded from the point of recruitment, with emphasis placed on practical skills, safety and precision.

‎According to the management, the pursuit of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 is expected to reinforce this internal structure and introduce tighter controls around quality management, environmental responsibility and occupational health and safety.

‎“In practical terms, this means Saturn corporation is putting in place systems that minimise defects, improve traceability across the production line, reduce operational risks and ensure safer working conditions. It also places the company in a stronger position to meet regulatory requirements, attract institutional buyers and engage in regional or international supply chains where certification is often a prerequisite”. Adds Sachdev.

‎For a company operating in heavy-duty vehicle assembly, the certifications are meant to ensure a more predictable production process, improved reliability of finished products and stronger brand credibility. Sachdev says this will also allow the company to move from a purely assembly-driven model towards a standards-based manufacturing operation that can sustain scale without compromising quality.

‎The company is working with government institutions to integrate TVET graduates into its operations through structured apprenticeships, providing hands-on experience within a functioning industrial environment. The initiative is designed to bridge the gap between training institutions and industry requirements while supporting the development of a technically competent labour pool.

‎“We are also expanding our production capacity to include a broader range of vehicles, from light commercial units to heavy-duty trucks and this will require maintaining operational discipline which is very important” He adds.

‎Saturn is targeting a cumulative output of 10,000 vehicles by 2027, a scale that demands consistency across all stages of production. The certifications will go a long way in supporting this expansion and sustaining the growth. “Having internationally recognised systems in place helps us manage that complexity without compromising on quality, safety or environmental responsibility,” he says.

‎Beyond the factory floor, the company’s growth is also influencing the wider value chain. Transporters, spare parts suppliers, mechanics and other service providers are seeing increased activity linked to the availability of locally assembled trucks. As Saturn strengthens its systems, it is likely to set higher operational expectations across these linked sectors.

‎“We are building a manufacturing operation that can compete beyond the domestic market”. He concludes.
