Tanzanians will no longer have to wait months for the delivery of pick-ups and other light commercial vehicles ordered from abroad following a major expansion of Saturn Corporation’s vehicle assembly plant in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam.
The company has unveiled an extension of its assembly facility that will now accommodate the local assembly of pick-ups and other light commercial vehicles, marking a significant milestone in Tanzania’s growing automotive manufacturing industry.
The investment forms part of Saturn Corporation’s long-term expansion strategy aimed at supporting the country’s industrialisation agenda, creating employment opportunities, accelerating technology transfer and reducing vehicle delivery timelines for customers across Tanzania and the wider East African region.
A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of a locally assembled Sinotruk Bolden pick-up, offering a glimpse into the future of Tanzania’s automotive manufacturing sector and demonstrating the country’s increasing capacity to produce world-class vehicles locally.
Speaking during the event, Minister for Industry and Trade, Hon. Judith Kapinga, commended Saturn Corporation for its contribution to Tanzania’s economic development through local manufacturing, skills transfer and job creation.
“I am pleased by the remarkable progress Saturn Corporation has achieved within a short period of two years. Creating direct and indirect employment opportunities that have benefited more than 2,800 Tanzanians is a significant contribution to our economy and to the government’s industrialisation agenda,” said Kapinga.
The Minister officially unveiled the expanded facility during an event that also marked two years since the establishment of Saturn’s assembly plant in Kigamboni. Since commencing operations, the company has primarily focused on assembling heavy commercial vehicles used in mining, construction, logistics and infrastructure development projects.
The expansion now opens a new chapter for the company, enabling it to enter the rapidly growing market for pick-ups and light commercial vehicles.
Saturn Corporation Director, Rahimtullah Habib, said the investment reflects the company’s confidence in Tanzania’s industrial future and commitment to increasing local manufacturing capacity.
“This expansion is part of our broader vision to continue investing in Tanzania’s industrial development while responding to growing market demand for quality vehicles assembled locally. We believe local assembly creates jobs, builds technical skills, promotes technology transfer and contributes significantly to national economic growth. Our goal is to continue expanding our operations and product range while positioning Tanzania as a competitive automotive manufacturing hub for the region,” said Habib.
Habib also called on the government to strengthen policy measures that support local vehicle assembly, including creating a more favourable tax environment for locally assembled vehicles, implementing policies that encourage the purchase of locally assembled products, improving port efficiency to facilitate timely delivery of components and fully implementing regional measures that promote local manufacturing within the East African Community.
The plant expansion will enable Saturn Corporation to assemble a range of pick-ups and light commercial vehicles, with the Sinotruk Bolden pick-up among the first models earmarked for local production.
The Sinotruk Bolden is a modern, durable and versatile vehicle designed to serve both commercial and personal transportation needs. Built to perform in demanding environments, the vehicle is expected to support sectors such as agriculture, construction, logistics, mining and small businesses while offering customers a reliable and affordable mobility solution.
Speaking during the event, Vinmart Group Chairman, Chetan Chug, said the company’s continued investment in local manufacturing reflects its long-term commitment to Tanzania.
“When we invested in vehicle assembly in Tanzania, we were investing in the country’s future. Today’s expansion demonstrates our confidence in Tanzania’s economic potential, its people and the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for industrial growth. We remain committed to supporting the country’s industrial transformation journey through strategic investments that create jobs, transfer technology and add value to the local economy,” said Chug.
To support the expansion programme, Saturn Corporation also strengthened its partnership with Sinotruk through the signing of a strategic collaboration agreement witnessed by Minister Kapinga.
The agreement is expected to deepen technical cooperation between the two companies and support the local assembly of a wider range of vehicles in Tanzania.
Sinotruk, one of China’s largest and most respected vehicle manufacturers, has maintained a long-standing partnership with Saturn Corporation through the assembly of HOWO heavy-duty trucks.
“We are delighted to further strengthen our partnership with Saturn Corporation. This collaboration will deepen technical cooperation, strengthen local assembly capabilities and expand the range of vehicles available to the Tanzanian market. We see tremendous potential for growth in Tanzania and remain committed to supporting the development of a strong local automotive industry,” said Tony Yia, General Manager of Sinotruk International’s East Africa Division.
Over the last two years, Saturn Corporation has emerged as one of Tanzania’s fastest-growing vehicle assembly companies. The company has increased its daily production capacity from 10 vehicles to 30 vehicles per day and now employs more than 360 Tanzanians directly in vehicle assembly, engineering, quality control and manufacturing operations. Thousands of other Tanzanians continue to benefit indirectly through transport services, supply chains, spare parts distribution, catering services, security, maintenance, logistics and other supporting businesses.
The company has also invested heavily in workforce development, training Tanzanian engineers and technicians to international standards while progressively reducing dependence on foreign technical expertise. It has strengthened partnerships with technical and vocational training institutions to develop a pipeline of skilled workers for Tanzania’s manufacturing sector.
In addition, Saturn Corporation is pursuing internationally recognised certifications, including ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001 for Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems as part of efforts to align its operations with global manufacturing standards.
The company has also announced plans to introduce locally assembled Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles as part of efforts to support cleaner and more cost-effective transport solutions in Tanzania.
The event was attended by H.E. Chen Mingjian, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Tanzania, Vinmart Group Chairman Chetan Chug, TISEZA Director General Gilead John Teri, directors of Saturn Corporation, senior representatives from Sinotruk, government officials, business leaders and other distinguished guests
