Buckreef Gold Strengthens Community Ties

Buckreef Gold Company has renewed its partnership with the Geita District Council through a Corporate Social Responsibility agreement worth TZS 600,000,000, targeting health, education, water and sanitation services for communities living around the mine.

Speaking during the engagement, Hon. Martin Shigella, Geita Regional Commissioner, commended Buckreef Gold Company for its disciplined approach to community development and legal compliance.

“Buckreef Gold has demonstrated seriousness in fulfilling its responsibilities by planning, budgeting and implementing its CSR projects in line with government requirements. What matters most is that communities see clear and lasting results through developments in schools, health facilities and water services that improve daily life,” he said.

Mining areas in Geita continue to experience strong population growth as economic activity attracts workers and families. In wards such as Rwamgasa, where the population exceeds 60,000 residents, public services face sustained pressure. Clinics serve more patients than their capacity allows. Schools operate with limited classrooms and sanitation facilities. Access to clean water remains a daily challenge for households, schools and health centres.

It is within this reality that the current CSR programme has been designed.

In education, the construction of classrooms and toilets addresses more than infrastructure gaps. It replaces unsafe learning environments, reduces overcrowding and restores dignity for pupils. New classrooms at Isunganghoro Primary School and improved facilities at Lubanda Primary School will allow children to learn in safer, healthier conditions, supporting attendance and long term educational outcomes.

In health, investment at Rwamgasa, Lubanda and Ibisabageni clinics responds directly to rising demand. New ward buildings, staff accommodation, water systems and sanitation facilities are intended to improve patient care while supporting health workers who serve these communities. Providing accommodation for medical staff close to clinics strengthens service continuity and improves emergency response.

Water and sanitation projects, including the borehole at Lubanda Clinic, address one of the most critical needs in the area. Reliable access to clean water supports infection control, maternal care and basic hygiene, particularly during dry seasons when shortages are most severe.

The General Manager of Buckreef Gold Company, Mr Isaac Bisansaba, said the company views CSR as a shared responsibility with the people who host the mine.

“Our operations take place within real communities. As production increases, our responsibility to those communities also increases. These projects focus on health, education and water because that is where impact is felt most directly by families,” he said.

Beyond CSR projects, Buckreef Gold Company contributes to everyday economic life in Geita through employment and local procurement. Jobs at the mine support families, education and household stability, while procurement from Tanzanian businesses enables local suppliers to grow, invest and create further employment. Together, these economic benefits complement community projects, ensuring that the presence of the mine translates into visible and lasting value for the region.

The renewed commitment builds on a proven record of delivery. In the previous year, Buckreef Gold Company invested TZS 420,000,000 in CSR projects, including classrooms that replaced unsafe structures, completion of health facilities and road works that improved access between villages during the rainy season.

Since the start of operations, the mine has invested a cumulative TZS 1,860,300,000 in community development initiatives across Geita. Many of these projects continue to serve thousands of residents, easing pressure on public services and strengthening social infrastructure.

Through this renewed CSR agreement, Buckreef Gold Company continues to demonstrate that responsible mining is grounded in people, partnership and practical action, delivering lasting value to the communities of Geita.

Buckreef Gold Mine is operated through a partnership between TRX Gold Corporation and STAMICO, Tanzania’s State Mining Corporation. This structure combines international mining expertise with direct government participation, ensuring that community investment aligns with national priorities and district development plans.
