By Correspondent James Kandoya

DAR ES SALAAM — The Chief of Staff of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF), Lieutenant General Salum Hajj Othman, has underscored the importance of strengthening regional and international cooperation in promoting peace and security across the globe.

He made the remarks yesterday in Dar es Salaam during a colourful ceremony to welcome home officers and soldiers of the Military Police unit who successfully completed their peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.

Lieutenant General Othman said peace and security were responsibilities that transcend national borders, calling on nations to work together to address emerging global threats.

He noted that the experience gained from international missions such as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) plays a crucial role in enhancing the operational capacity and professionalism of the Tanzanian military.

Commending the returning contingent, he praised their discipline, patriotism, and dedication throughout the deployment, saying their exemplary performance brought honour to both the TPDF and the entire nation.

“You have been true ambassadors of Tanzania,” he said. “Your commitment, courage, and professionalism have shown the world the high standards of our Defence Force. I congratulate each one of you for representing our country with dignity and integrity.”

The Chief of Staff urged the officers and soldiers to apply the knowledge and experience gained during their mission to improve operations at home. He emphasized that international exposure enables forces to learn from others, adopt new technologies, and strengthen coordination mechanisms vital for maintaining peace and stability.

Lieutenant General Othman further highlighted that Tanzania’s continued participation in global peacekeeping efforts reflects the nation’s unwavering commitment to international solidarity and peaceful coexistence.

He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting such missions, noting that peacekeeping not only promotes global harmony but also enhances the skills and capabilities of Tanzanian troops.

The returning contingent served under the UNIFIL mission in southern Lebanon, contributing to efforts to maintain peace and protect civilians in conflict-affected areas.

As they return home, the peacekeepers are expected to share their experiences with colleagues and strengthen Tanzania’s contribution to regional and international peace initiatives.
