Dar es Salaam, 27 August 2026 — Leading industry player in digital mobility Bolt Tanzania has launched new efforts to free the roads from uncompliant ride-hailing drivers, having funded over 600 LATRA licences in August so far, with a target of over 5000 drivers by end of 2026. According to the company, these efforts will accelerate safety and professionalism across Tanzania’s ride-hailing industry.
The cost for each LATRA licence is valued between TSh30,000 and TSh60,000, besides training fees, depending on vehicle category. This license allows drivers to lawfully carry passengers and access more public areas pick-ups and drop-offs. With a target of over 5000 drivers, Bolt’s investment may easily cross Tsh300,000,000, demonstrating public private partnership to ensure on-road compliance, safety, and peace of mind in the mobility sector.
The initiative comes as regulatory compliance continues to play a central role in strengthening road safety and consumer confidence. According to LATRA, the Authority issued 91,178 licences for private hire vehicles during the 2024/25 financial year, reflecting continued efforts to formalise and regulate the sector.
Speaking on the initiative, Dimmy Kanyankole, Senior General Manager, Bolt East Africa, said compliance should be viewed as a shared investment in safer mobility rather than simply a regulatory obligation.
“A licensed driver represents more than regulatory compliance—it demonstrates that the individual has met the standards required to provide safe and professional transport services. And we need more of these to meet growing demand for movement, a primary driver of Tanzania’s economy. By funding these licences, we are investing in drivers, strengthening public confidence and supporting the long-term sustainability of Tanzania’s digital mobility sector. Our goal will not end at financing 5000 LATRA licences. There are more drivers out there that cannot afford licensing and the industry can be 100% compliant if we collaborate to do more.”
Bolt said the programme removes financial barriers that may prevent some drivers from completing licensing requirements and remain unqualified to become Bolt drivers and access income opportunities enjoyed by many drivers that partner with the nation’s largest ride-hailing player.
