Global Insights: Tanzania records fastest-growing rides market in Africa

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – Jan 20, 2026 – Bolt has announced its latest global mobility insights, revealing Tanzania as one of the world’s fastest-growing rides markets and the top-performing African country by annual growth rate. According to Bolt’s 2025 global report, rides in Tanzania grew by +68% year-on-year, outperforming Kenya (+35%), South Africa (+25%), Nigeria (+3%) and Ghana (+2%), and firmly positioning the country among Bolt’s fastest-accelerating markets worldwide.

Globally, Tanzania appears in the company’s Top 5 fastest-growing rides markets, second only to Switzerland, which is growing at a staggering +173%. Following the two are Norway (+45%), Slovakia (+37%) and Belgium (+37%). This surge comes as Bolt reports a 46% increase in rides volume worldwide, driven by rising digital adoption and improved platform efficiencies across Europe, Africa and Asia.

Tanzania’s rapid growth is closely linked to the country’s expanding digital ecosystem. TCRA’s 2024/25 statistics show internet penetration now exceeds 72%, with over 63 million mobile subscriptions registered nationwide, making mobile phones the primary gateway to digital services. GSMA’s 2024 Mobile Economy Africa report also identifies Tanzania as a high-momentum market, with smartphone adoption rising sharply and mobile-internet users projected to grow faster than the Sub-Saharan Africa average.

Industry analysts say this digital shift has transformed urban mobility behaviours. Tanzania’s young, tech-savvy population is increasingly choosing app-based transport for reliability, safety features and transparent pricing—factors that have fuelled Bolt’s expansion across Dar es Salaam, Dodoma and Arusha.

Bolt Senior General Manager, East Africa, Dimmy Kanyankole, said the country’s performance underscores the strength of its digital economy. “Tanzania is rewriting the mobility story on the continent. Our growth reflects not just demand for safe and affordable transport, but also the country’s fast digitalisation and the entrepreneurial energy of our drivers,” he said.

As global mobility platforms evolve, Tanzania’s rise signals a broader shift: East Africa is emerging as one of the continent’s most dynamic hubs for digital transport services.
