Africa Students invited to Global Nuclear Event‎

Young Africans have been invited to take part in an international forum on nuclear technology, with winners of a continent-wide video competition set to receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Russia.

‎The winners of the Atoms Empowering Africa video contest will attend Obninsk NEW 2026, a global forum and summer school focused on the peaceful use of nuclear technologies. The event will take place in Obninsk, Russia, from 22 to 27 June 2026.

‎Now in its fourth year, Obninsk NEW brings together students, young professionals and experts from across the world to exchange ideas on the future of nuclear innovation and international cooperation.

‎This year’s competition is being held in partnership with the BRICS Nuclear Platform, an initiative that promotes collaboration in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

‎Participants selected through the contest will take part in both the main forum and a specialised summer school. While the forum will centre on dialogue and knowledge exchange, the summer school will offer more practical learning through lectures, seminars and workshops.

‎Interest in nuclear technology across Africa has been growing, driven by education programmes and international partnerships. In Tanzania, Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom is advancing the Mkuju River uranium project, while Tanzanian students continue to receive academic training and hands-on experience at partner institutions in Russia.

‎Such initiatives are seen as key to developing local expertise and preparing a new generation of professionals in the field. Programmes like Atoms Empowering Africa also provide a platform for young people to present ideas on how nuclear technologies can help address development challenges in their countries.

‎The competition is open to Africans aged between 18 and 35. Entrants are required to submit a short video explaining how nuclear technologies could contribute to solving key issues in their communities.

‎Submissions close on 1 May, with further details available on the Rosatom Africa website.
